Presenting the album «Tromboneando con Demetrio Muñiz»

The composer, orchestrator, trombonist, music producer, and orchestra director, Cuban Demetrio Muñiz, has a long and intense history with the Recording and Musical Editions House, Egrem, who presented his latest album on Thursday, March 21st, paying tribute to the trombone and its musical versatility.

Titled «Tromboneando con Demetrio Muñiz,» this album was unveiled by Egrem at the Areito Studio, marking the beginning of the year-long series of presentations by the record label in celebration of its 60th anniversary.

Demetrio, with his roots as an instrumentalist, leaves a legacy for new generations of performers, showcasing the diversity of the trombone with essential study pieces for the Cuban academy. Moreover, this album represents the first in Cuban music history dedicated to the instrument in all its dimensions and mastery, highlighting its fundamental role in both national and international music.

The CD features a quintet of highly skilled trombonists demonstrating their talent: Cubans Amaury Pérez, Yoandy Argudín, Jorge Ernesto Ortega, José Miguel Hidalgo, and Venezuelan Ángel Subero, among the world’s top five, a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops.

Other significant performers joined the album, including pianists Alejandro Falcón and Rolando Luna, Abdel González on Cuban percussion, Frank Rubio on bass, and Mandy Cantero, vocalist of Van Van.

Freshness and originality characterize the repertoire of this album, created by the renowned master director of the Buena Vista Social Club, featuring works that highlight the technical and performing possibilities of the instrument.

The album presents twelve tracks, six of which are originals for the occasion, at the request of the extraordinary Venezuelan trombonist Subero: «Cerro Negro,» «Tromboneando,» «Ironic Waltz of Coin,» «Three Guajiros,» «Midnight Danzón,» and «Doric Bolero.»

Additionally, it includes quintet versions of Cuban music classics: «Son de la Loma» by Miguel Matamoros, «Canción» by César Portillo de la Luz, «María Caracoles» by Pello el Afrokán, «Rumba de Cajón» by Juan Pablo Torres, and «Sábanas Blancas» by Gerardo Alfonso. These reinterpretations uniquely blend elements of both academic and popular Cuban music.

The CD also features a making-of documentary by the renowned filmmaker Alexis Oliva, providing insights into the recording sessions of the album.

«Tromboneando con Demetrio Muñiz» will be available on digital platforms on March 31st.
