Arte Fiel Celebrates UNEAC’s 65th Anniversary with a Week of Cultural Activities
To mark its 65th anniversary, the Union of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC) will hold a weeklong cultural program from August 17 to 22 featuring book and publication launches, panel discussions, concerts, and exhibitions. The organization’s national headquarters, located at 17th and H streets in Havana’s Vedado district, will serve as the main venue for the events.
The program is part of the Arte Fiel campaign launched by UNEAC and will bring together renowned writers, artists, and intellectuals from across the country.
The agenda includes tribute performances dedicated to UNEAC by prestigious companies such as the National Folkloric Ensemble of Cuba and the National Ballet of Cuba. The exhibition Retratos will also open, featuring works by students from the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts who portray prominent figures of Cuban culture, many of them founders of UNEAC.
The organization’s national headquarters will open its doors to the general public, offering a commemorative program celebrating the 65th anniversary of Cuba’s leading organization of artistic and literary vanguard.
The anniversary activities will also have a strong presence in the provinces, where UNEAC’s territorial committees have prepared programs focused on the organization’s history, recognition of its founders, and dialogue between different generatioosns of creators.
The planned initiatives will highlight UNEAC’s imprint on the cultural life of each territory through interviews with writers and artists, firsthand accounts from participants, recollections of key moments in the organization’s history, and reflections on the continuing relevance of the cultural policy outlined in Fidel Castro’s landmark speech “Words to the Intellectuals.”
The centennial of Fidel Castro’s birth will likewise occupy a central place in the celebrations. Various activities will address his views on culture, his relationship with intellectuals, and the role played by UNEAC in the construction of the Revolution’s cultural project.
The program will give broad visibility to visual arts exhibitions, book presentations, concerts, artistic tours of communities, literary gatherings, discussion forums, community projects, and tributes to prominent figures in Cuban culture. At the same time, it will showcase the work of young creators alongside that of established artists.
Special attention will be given to initiatives stemming from the Arte Fiel campaign, profiles of UNEAC members, efforts to preserve the legacy of deceased artists, and recognition of those who have contributed over decades to strengthening the organization’s prestige throughout the provinces.
The initiative seeks to tell the living story of an organization that, 65 years after its founding, continues to champion artistic creation, critical thought, national identity, and the commitment of Cuban intellectuals to society.
