Celebrating Mother’s Day with Music Composed by Women

Musical pieces composed by women will be the centerpiece of a concert celebrating Mother’s Day, taking place this Saturday, May 4th, starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Basilica Minor of the Convent of San Francisco de Asís, located in the Historic Center of Havana.

Taking charge of this festivity are the Vocal Ensemble Luna, under the direction of Maestro Maribel Nodarse, and the Havana Chamber Orchestra conducted by Maestro Daiana García.

As special guests, the audience will have the pleasure of enjoying performances by acclaimed pianist Lianne Vega and talented percussionist Janet Rodríguez. Additionally, the concert will feature captivating choral performances by Vocal Luna, Mi Sol, Voces Blancas, and Alegretto. These choral groups, under the direction of Claudia Moreno, Greychel Lora, Olivia Oliva, and Maestro Maribel Nodarse respectively, promise to enrich the evening with their harmonious voices and musical prowess.

Elaine Espinosa, the cultural promoter of the concert hall, emphasized the notable diversity of composers represented in this recital. The program features compositions by Eva Ugalde from the Basque Country, Anna Cederberg-Orreteg from Sweden, Maria Theresia von Paradis from Austria, Cécile Chaminade from France, as well as contributions from American composers Florence Price and Andrea Clearfield. Additionally, the lineup includes works by Cuban composers Beatriz Corona, Wilma Alba, Marialy Pacheco, and Jenny Peña, showcasing a rich tapestry of international musical talent.

This musical event offers a well-deserved homage to those whom José Martí honored with his eloquent thoughts and which you can enjoy at the Basilica Minor of the Convent of San Francisco de Asís, located on Calle Oficios entre Churruca y Amargura, in Old Havana.
