Cuba’s Cinemateca Proposes a Retrospective of Sara Gómez’s Work

The May program of the Cuba’s Cinemateca offers an almost complete retrospective of the cinematographic work of the acclaimed filmmaker Sara Gómez.

These titles, which will be shown in high definition, have been restored through an agreement signed by the institution with Susan Lord, director of the Vulnerable Media Lab and professor of film and media at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

The screenings will begin on the 15th with the film «De cierta manera» and the documentary «Mi aporte«. Other films include «Año uno«, «Atención prenatal«, «De bateyes«, «Guanabacoa: crónica de mi familia«, «Iré a Santiago» and «Isla del Tesoro«.

The month’s program opens with the second and final part of the tribute to the centenary of the famous American actor Marlon Brando.

The program includes a short cycle highlighting the filmography of the great Japanese actress Machiko Kyo, commemorating a century since her birth.

This will be followed by «El crimen en el cine polaco«, sponsored by the Polish Embassy in Cuba, which will offer a journey through this beloved genre, spanning six decades and six films.

More information about the films can be found in Sala 23 y 12

Among other noteworthy events of the month is the exhibition of several films never before released in Cuba, produced by the Sverdlosk Studios during the Soviet era.

Their presentation is made possible by a donation from the Ruskino company, on the occasion of a recent visit to Havana by a delegation accompanying a highly successful Russian film showcase.

There will also be the screening of two animated films for adults and a tribute to the great Czech writer Franz Kafka on the centenary of his birth.

According to Antonio Mazón Robau, the Cinemateca’s programmer, the Joris Ivens room is reserved for the premiere of a documentary about the relationship between two cinema icons: Alain Delon and Romy Schneider.

From May 8 to 10, three animated films by the famous French animator Michel Ocelot will be screened as part of the International Exhibition of Educational Films (MICE).
