Premieres and La fille mal gardée highlight Ballet Nacional de Cuba’s April program

The Ballet Nacional de Cuba, under the direction of Viengsay Valdés, will present three performances at the Avellaneda Hall of the National Theatre of Cuba on April 17, 18, and 19, all at 5:00 p.m.

Tickets will go on sale at the theater box office starting Tuesday, April 7, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.

The program features La fille mal gardée, in Alicia Alonso’s version based on the original by Jean Dauberval, according to the company’s press department.

The lineup also includes two premieres by Italian choreographer Mauro de Candia: Aria Suspended and La morte del cigno. Following a successful career as a dancer—during which he performed works by Balanchine, Béjart, Thoss, Forsythe, Kylián, Ek, Naharin, and Goecke—de Candia devoted himself fully to choreography, a creative pursuit he had begun at a very young age. His works have been staged by companies such as Introdans, the Royal Ballet of Flanders, the Ballet of the Teatro di Torino, the Washington Ballet, the Berlin State Ballet (Staatsballett Berlin), Gauthier Dance, and Danza Contemporánea de Cuba. In recognition of his significant contribution to the art of dance in his country, he has received several awards, including the Positano Prize and the Giuliana Penz Prize. In 2009, the Italian state awarded him the Silver Medal.

Other works to be presented that weekend include Muñecos, the well-known creation by Alberto Méndez; pas de deux from Le Corsaire and Excelsior; and a piece showcasing the company’s male ensemble, Symphony for Nine Men, by James Kelly.

The cast will be led by principal dancers Viengsay Valdés, Anette Delgado, Ányelo Montero, Yankiel Vázquez, and Ernesto Díaz, alongside other rising talents making their debut in the featured works. Among them are Alianed Moreno, who recently delivered a successful performance in Giselle, and Laura Kamila and Alejandro Alderete, both widely applauded in recent performances of Don Quixote. These three young dancers will debut in La fille mal gardée. They will be joined by Nadila Estrada, Carolina Fonseca, Roque Salvador, Carolina Estrada, Marcos Damián, Carlos Lino, Karel Albernas, Carlos López, and Erick Solórzano, among others.
